Describe the concrete project you have in mind

A handful of details and a few pictures let the first visit focus on the questions your particular lot raises.

What to include in your message

  1. The property location. A farm outside Ocala, a home in The Villages and a lot near the water in Crystal River each come with different soil, drainage and community rules, so the address answers several questions at once.
  2. What you want and roughly how big. A new driveway, a wider parking area, a lanai or patio, entry steps, a pad for a shed, carport or RV, or a damaged slab that needs to come out. Paced measurements are fine for now.
  3. What will sit or drive on it. Everyday cars and golf carts, or heavier loads like a work truck, a camper, a boat or horse trailer, a spa or farm equipment. Heavier loads usually mean a thicker slab and a sturdier base.
  4. What covers the ground today. Lawn, gravel, shell rock, pavers, asphalt or old concrete. Anything that has to be broken out and hauled away becomes part of the job.

Photos worth taking

Begin with a wide shot showing the whole work area and its surroundings, taken from the road or from the back of the house. Then add closer shots of cracks, sunken panels, lifted edges and nearby tree trunks. If an afternoon storm passes before the visit, a quick photo of where the water runs and where it pools is especially valuable, because drainage has so much to do with how long a slab lasts here.

What happens next

The contractor arranges a time to see the property in person. Being on site reveals the soil, the lay of the land and the route a concrete truck would need, none of which comes through fully in a photo, and only after that can a firm scope and price be put in writing. Ask for that written scope to name the base and compaction, slab thickness, reinforcement, joint layout and finish, so one estimate can be compared fairly with another.
